The European Artificial Intelligence landscape (Brussels, 18/01/2018) - Workshop report - European Commission
[+]
Europe has a leading edge in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. This workshop report describes activities being carried out in the field of AI in different Member States and in some of the countries associated to Horizon 2020. Learn about the academic, industrial and funding ecosystems, and find out more about the various governmental initiatives and strategies related to AI.
In January 2018, the Commission in cooperation with the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI) organised a workshop to take stock of the current state of the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe, and to identify opportunities for pan-European collaboration, capitalising on European strengths in AI.
No less than 20 countries were represented. The participants' presentations and contributions have produced an initial overview of the European AI landscape, covering the academic, industrial, and funding ecosystems, governmental initiatives, and suggestions for the way forward.
Note that this is not an exhaustive survey, only a starting point, gathering inputs from countries which could be represented at the workshop.

ICREA Memoir 2017 - Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA)
[+]
ICREA performance indicators in 2017 were again impressive compared to those of other research institutions. The impact of ICREA in terms of scientific excellence measured by the number and quality of publications, or in attraction of talent, and also in terms of its social and economic importance for the local community, has been remarkable. This is even more relevant considering that 2017 was a time of political unrest in our recent history.

Workshop on good practices on increased accessibility of research/innovation infrastructure to industry for testing, demonstration and co-creation - Test beds as drivers for EU growth and innovation (Gothenburg, 30/11/2017 - 01/12/2017) - Workshop report - Joint Research Centre (JRC). European Commission
[+]
Test beds and research infrastructures are platforms that generate and share knowledge to address megatrends and support research and innovation (R&I) efforts to increase the European Union’s (EU) competitiveness. A well-developed ecosystem for transforming knowledge into products and services is vital for any knowledge economy. State of the art Research Infrastructures provide key services to the various scientific communities allowing them to extend the frontiers of knowledge and thus strengthening Europe's internationally leading scientific role. Examples of research infrastructures are CERN or the European Spallation Source (ESS). For industry, it is equally important to have access to high quality and advanced test and demonstration (T&D) facilities, or test beds, as it is for the scientific community to have access to adequate research infrastructures. Test beds are essential to be able to improve products, services and processes and to develop new concepts to meet e.g., changing customer needs. Testbeds, or test environments, also allow companies to verify ideas and concepts under real conditions and by doing so, lower the risk before market introduction and to get ideas and concepts faster to the market. Examples of test beds are AstaZero or Biorukki Pilot Center Infrastructure. R&I is crucial for Europe’s industries to remain competitive, deliver sustainable growth and jobs, and face increased competition from the likes of Asia. Europe needs to open up its innovation infrastructures, intensify collaboration and exploit its collective knowledge. Test beds can support knowledge sharing and co-creation, in order to take advantage of the Single Market and streamline technology deployment. They are driven by industry demands and societal needs in diverse fields such as healthcare, communication and transport. The EU can play an important role by promoting a collaborative approach in order to develop critical mass and a one-stop-shop to facilitate test bed access.

Trend-analysis of science, technology and innovation policies for BNCTs - Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
[+]
This “Trend-Analysis of Science, Technology and Innovation Policies for BNCTs” aims to analyse policies pertaining to nanotechnology and biotechnology over the past years with regard to their directionality and technology-specificity. The analysis provides some evidence that technology-push policies are favoured for young technology fields, while application-pull policies tend to be applied to more mature fields. In technology-specific policies, the percentage of pure application-pull policies is much lower than that observed for general STI policies. Most individual STI policies are technology-specific in their title or description. Most general STI policies also mention a specific technology and are thus applicable to both the field of general STI and the field of the respective technology. In the case of biotechnology, nanotechnology and ICT, by contrast, at least one third of the policies are unique to the respective field, and only up to a quarter are shared with any other technology field.
